Chimney camera inspection using CCTV video

For the most part, most chimneys would not need to be inspected with video equipment as a simple visual inspection is usually all that is required to identify causes of chimney related problems. If your chimney is affected with symptoms that cannot be identified with a visual inspection or full exterior examination, a video inspection may be performed in order to take a closer look inside the smoke chamber and chimney lining to pinpoint exactly where the problem lies.

Chimney video inspections are only called for when normal visual inspection does not give enough information to diagnose problems. The process involves sending a camera, mounted on a swiveling rod, up the chimney. The camera is attached to a  unit with a viewing screen so that we can best direct the camera. As we operate the camera and guide it through the chimney, a video is recorded which can then be reviewed once the inspection is complete.

Why would I need a Chimney CCTV inspection?

In most cases, this type of in-depth look at the chimney will identify:

  • Blockages
  • Cracks
  • Internal damage to the chimney lining
  • Nests or other detritus

It will reveal the exact nature of the damage and allow us to provide a full & accurate estimate. Masonry chimneys tend to have cracks in the brickwork and breaks in the chimney liners and the only way to spot the exact location is to use this video technology.

Prefabricated chimneys can rust and may have defects in the assembly that cause problems that can only be spotted using the chimney video survey. Even in older metal chimney liners corrosion can cause pin-holes that can present a risk to the integrity of the chimney.

Usually, if substantial defects exist, a new liner may be required to fix the situation and allow continued safe operation of the fireplace or heating appliance.
