Clean Chimneys are safer Chimneys

UK Fire statistics show that every year thousands of houses have chimney fires. This is largely due to the neglect of not having the chimney swept, which results in a build-up of flammable soot and tar within the appliance or flue. Blocked and choked chimneys containing soot and tar build up can catch fire, damaging the property and endangering lives. The NACS participates with the Government’s annual fire safety campaign.

The primary causes of chimney fires are:

  • Neglect of chimney sweeping and cleaning
  • Burning Unseasoned wet wood and unauthorised fuel such as fence panels or pallets
  • Obstructions such as vermin nests

Insurance companies may not pay out for fire damage if it is caused by an unswept chimney. A professional Chimney Sweep will also be able to provide a valid certificate of sweeping that is recognised by insurance companies. NACS Sweeps will be able to clean, recommend repairs or maintenance and advise on the safe use of your fireplace or appliance.

To help prevent Chimney fires

  • Regularly sweeping of your flue as per the sweeping frequencies specified below
  • Comply with the building regulations and ensure any new appliance is fitted by an accredited HETAS Installer. Your NACS Sweep will be able to tell you if your solid fuel installation complies with building regulations
  • Use the recommended fuel for your appliance and chimney
  • Ensure that you use the appliance as per manufacturers instructions
